CED 7463: Advanced Techniques in Play Therapy for Children and Adolescents

Course Description

3 hours. Prerequisites: CED6412, CED6422, and CED7432. The course builds on skills acquired during Introduction to Play Therapy. Advanced theory and application will be taught in three main areas over: 1) play themes and behaviors, treatment planning, assessments, and documentation, 2) Sandtray Therapy, and 3) Child Parent Relationship Therapy. The Students will learn the role of paly themes and play behaviors in case conceptualization and treatment planning the play therapist in different settings, the stages of the play therapy relationship, the basic play therapy skills and guidelines for becoming a Registered Play Therapist. An experiential component will focus on exposure to basic play therapy skills through observation of professionals, instructors or videotaped experts performing play therapy, as well as participation in mock play therapy session. The course develops play therapy practice skills and an understanding of theoretical approaches of play therapy at the level required for eventual registration as a play therapist, and as required by the Association of Play Therapy.
