Marsha Linehan, an introduction

This LibGuide is devoted to the life and work of Marsha Linehan, the founder of the school of dialectical behavior therapy. Marsha Linehan developed dialectical behavior therapy in the 1970s to address what she perceived to be inadequacies in the methodologies and theoretical framework of the standard behavior therapy of the day, specifically its inefficacy in treating "difficult" or uncooperative patients, such as patients suffering from borderline personality disorder, suicidal or self-harming patients, heroin addicts, and patients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Per its name, dialectical behavior therapy works by attempting to balance the dialectics of accepting feelings and situations for what they are with a commitment to change and improvement. The goal of dialectical behavior therapy is to teach patients a set of skills for successfully coping with out-of-control emotions or desires, not by avoidance or evasion, but by honestly seeing and accepting them for what they are, a process Linehan termed "radical acceptance." Crucially, this "radical acceptance" is not a surrender to or passivity in the face of these extreme emotions, but a way of deliberately detaching so the patient can act consciously and deliberately, and not out of a place of desperation or panic. Linehan adapted these mindfulness techniques from the fields of psychology as well as her own spiritual experiences with Zen Buddhism and Roman Catholicism. Linehan has always had a passion for reaching high-risk, "difficult" patients who no one else wants to treat (Linehan noted that in the 1970s, she was one of the only researchers in the United States studying suicide prevention.)

Dialectical behavior therapy is a comprehensive therapeutic approach that has been found to be clinically effective in the treatment of borderline personality disorder, suicidality, and addiction. In this LibGuide, you will find a number of resources related to both DBT and Linehan's life and career.
