CED 6632: Family Wellness in Society

Course Description

2 hours. Designed as an introductory class for the Marriage and Family Therapy curriculum, this course pertains to the clinical treatment of individuals, couples, and families from a preventative, psychoeducational point of view covering family health and wellness across the lifespan, systemic assessment of familial health, functioning and wellness, and characteristics of healthy and resilient families. This course also covers the sociology and history of the family unit, the family structure in current society, and addressing issues pertaining to the family in current society. Additionally, students will examine the impact of stress on the family, including sexuality, trauma, crisis, addiction, interpersonal violence, unemployment, and career on family life, as well as ways of fostering family wellness with consideration for cultural issues. This course will assist MFT students in developing necessary skills to be psychoeducators and the foundational understanding of the sociology of family, marriage, and coupling.
